What if the past never truly dies? What if secrets, buried beneath layers of time and silence, still breathe and reach into the present? Cynthia Duerer’s Luck’s Legacy detonates this very question in a literary revelation that shatters the boundaries of history, mystery, and the supernatural.
From the terror-soaked streets of Revolutionary France to the sultry, shadow-laced plantations of the American South, Luck’s Legacy drags readers through a labyrinth of aristocratic scandal, spectral guardians, and a treasure cloaked in blood and betrayal. Duerer’s narrative is a masterclass in tension, sleek, atmospheric, and utterly compelling, where every page pulses with the breath of a past desperate to be uncovered.
At its heart is Shannon Devlin, a young Irish stowaway thrust into a haunted inheritance that could redefine his fate, or obliterate it. Haunted by the elusive "Ombre" and "Shadow," ghostly white dogs bound to a secret centuries in the making, Shannon must navigate a treacherous landscape of hostile enemies, hidden graves, and the crushing weight of legacy.
But Luck’s Legacy is more than a story; it’s an exploration of survival, transformation, and the uncanny ties that bind generations. Cynthia Duerer’s prose doesn’t just tell history; it resurrects it, lacing the humid tension of the Carolina lowcountry with the sharp terror of revolution and the eerie whisper of the supernatural.
The stakes? Monumental. The prize? A fortune hidden beneath lies, loyalty, and blood. The question now is this: when the earth finally surrenders the truth buried beneath Galway’s crumbling walls, will the legacy revealed be a blessing long-awaited, or a curse that will haunt the living forever?
What happens when ghosts refuse to stay buried?
About The Author
Cynthia Duerer was the oldest of five children in the Reid Whitfield family, who lived in the East Texas Piney Woods of North Beaumont. The siblings were close and had many pets, both wild (raccoons and squirrels) and domestic (horses and dogs). Mostly, however, the family members were dog lovers, and where they lived was a dog’s paradise.
The inspiration for the Luck’s Legacy book series stemmed from a legend about a wooded area close to their own acreage. Supposedly, an otherwise unknown man referred to as Mr. Trahan buried a fortune in gold under one of the live oak trees there decades earlier. Though the story was never confirmed, diggings found under the trees pointed to its validity. Regardless, the story intrigued the family, especially the children. But with no further information, the legend faded over time. Years later, sitting under one of the live oaks that had enigmatically become the Whitfield family’s front yard, the intrigue of the old story revitalized in her mind. It was her love for dogs that prompted Cynthia to immortalize one as a key ingredient in these historical young adult novels.
Though encouraged by some teachers to seek a career in journalism, Cynthia graduated from Lamar State College of Technology with a degree in Elementary Education. She taught in Houston, Texas, for twenty-three years, during which time she met her husband, Bob Duerer, who is a descendant of the Renaissance artist, Albrecht Dürer, the woodcarver most recognized for his Praying Hands.
Cynthia has been inspired by numerous writers, such as Robert Louis Stevenson, who is one of her favorites. She agrees with his analogy: “Writing is to an adult as play is to a child.” Now retired, she has time to “play.” She also teaches the Bible to preteens at Jersey Village Baptist Church in Northwest Houston.
