The AES Corporation (NYSE:AES) today issued the following statement regarding the passing of Richard Darman, Non-Executive Chairman of the Board.
Paul Hanrahan, AES President and Chief Executive Officer stated, “Our heartfelt condolences go out to Dick Darman’s family at this time of great loss. Dick was a leader, mentor and good friend. All of us at AES are indebted to him. Under Dick’s leadership and vision, AES transformed itself into the strong and growing company it is today. He had an unparalleled ability to bring out the best in people. The high standard he set for himself, coupled with the energy and enthusiasm he brought to his work, served as a daily inspiration to all. He will be greatly missed.”
Mr. Darman joined AES as a Director in July 2002 and served as Non-Executive Chairman of the Board since May 2003.
Philip A. Odeen, the Alternate Lead Independent Director of the AES Board of Directors, will assume the duties of Non-Executive Chairman and Lead Independent Director of the Board. In addition to his service on the AES Board of Directors, Mr. Odeen is a member of the Boards of Directors of Convergys Corporation, and Northrop Grumman Corporation. He was the Non-Executive Chairman of Avaya until its sale in 2007. He retired as Chairman of TRW Inc. in 2002.
