Livermore, California May 19, 2021 (Issuewire.com) - Four Civil Air Patrol cadets from Pleasanton and Tracy were recognized for their service to the community today during a special awards ceremony. The ceremony marked the opening event for the open house held by the Livermore-based Tri-Valley Composite Squadron 156.

Cadet Sergeant Sriya Katreddi of Pleasanton was presented with the Air Force Sergeants Association Award to Outstanding Squadron Cadet Noncommissioned Officer of the Year. Cadet Chief Giulia Telli of Pleasanton and Cadet Lieutenant Lena Amato of Tracy were presented with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Award for Cadet NCOs and Cadet Officers respectively. Cadet First Sergeant Yuhui Wang was presented with a Commander's Commendation from the California Wing Commander.

"I would have never imagined being here even three years ago, but CAP has given me the means to accomplish many things I would have never imagined," said Cadet Telli, who is taking flight lessons through Civil Air Patrol's California Flight Academy. "So when I say it is an honor, I truly do mean it. Thank you."

"I am very grateful for being recognized with this award," said Cadet Katreddi, "Even as the pandemic put a spoke in everyone's wheels, my peers and mentors at my Civil Air Patrol squadron continued to provide a space where I could learn and grow."

The Air Force Sergeants Association Award is an annual award that recognizes a sole, outstanding cadet leader in a Civil Air Patrol unit. Awardees must be nominated by their squadron commander. Only one cadet in each squadron can be nominated for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) awards in the NCO and Officer categories. The VFW awards require cadets to be in good academic standing, demonstrate leadership in Civil Air Patrol, be of high moral character, and demonstrate patriotism. The California Wing Commander's Commendation was awarded for Cadet Wang's outstanding leadership as the squadron's CyberPatriot team captain. Her team placed in the top competitive tier of the national CyberPatriot cyber security competition, ranking in the top 15% of all teams nation-wide.
