Young cancer researcher’s group raises impressive $50,000 donation for Alberta cancer research and frontline healthcare workers

Edmonton, Alberta – May 17, 2021 – For Pulkit Kumar, cancer research is a passion. From an early age, the 21-year-old undergraduate student at the University of Alberta has known that he was meant to study the science behind what makes the terrible disease so prevalent in society and so virulent to treatment.  Most of all, he knew he wanted to do everything in his power to stop cancer in its tracks.

While the young scientist’s career is just starting, Kumar has already managed to make his mark on the cancer research landscape as both a researcher and fundraiser. His study, published on Research Gate, a well-respected platform used by scientists to host their findings, is one of the most widely read with more than 500,000 views to date. In his popular paper, Kumar methodically breaks down the scientific findings surrounding the use of ocimum sanctum, a popular cancer treatment in Ayurvedic medicine.

“I believe in a holistic approach to cancer treatment,” explains Kumar. “Most of the headlines that we see about cancer treatment are for new medicines and new, more targeted or more aggressive treatments. These treatments, while hugely important, don’t treat the patient as a whole. We know that many patients wish to bring in treatments they are comfortable and familiar with from traditional medical practices. We’re now looking at the science behind those treatments to ensure, firstly, that they are safe, but also to see how these treatments may fight the disease or may treat peripheral symptoms that cancer patients often suffer from.”

While continuing his studies, Kumar co-founded the University of Alberta’s first Cancer Society, designed to discuss news, new cancer treatments, and importantly, to raise funds for cancer research. In 2020, the society’s pioneering year, the University of Alberta Cancer Society managed to raise an impressive $50,000. The funds were donated by the group to both frontline healthcare workers as well as cancer research foundations.

“We know, from the successful vaccine rollout and other breakthroughs, that funding is key to finding successful treatments. The finest scientific minds are working on treatments for this horrific disease, but even the best scientists need funding to run their labs, their equipment and to pay for new studies. While I am just embarking on my career as a cancer researcher, it’s important to support those already in the field who are making breakthroughs. I’m so humbled and proud to see the support of those who, like me, want to make as big an impact as possible in the field of cancer research. I have every confidence that the University of Alberta’s Cancer Society will be able to continue raising funds for this worthy cause.
