Property of America, led by successful black entrepreneur Dexter Morrison, has launched a major fundraising project to help fuel community development in Baltimore.
Calling this project, the "#1Building Project," Morrison said his company is selling T-shirts and other merchandise to invest in "Black and Brown kids." "It starts with rebuilding our communities at ground zero," Morrison said. "There has to be a plan and a vision on how we want our communities to look, going forward."
Morrison added that, "Too many of our kids are suffering from mental health and anxiety issues that we, as a nation, have no answers for. We, as Americans, have to do a better job of protecting their hopes and dreams, and inspiring them, that they matter. As a nation, we need to have this talk!"
In addition to the company's "Stand Up for Justice" products, Property for America has released a line of "Thank You State" silhouettes, recognizing the states that voted for President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of the "Stand Up for Justice" products will be shared with groups in Selma leading the campaign and fighting for social justice. These shirts pay tribute to the late Congressman John Lewis (D-Ga.) who recently died. Lewis led the historic, 1965 "Bloody Sunday" March on Selma where he and thousands of protesters were faced with a wall of law enforcement who beat up and arrested the peaceful group.
For the #1Building Project Morrison is working with three Civil Rights activists who are committed to work with him on. They are:
- Charles Person: One of the original waves of some 400 Freedom Riders, working with the late Congressman John Lewis.
- Mr. Hezekiah Watkins: The youngest Freedom Rider who was arrested at the age of 13.
- Ron Silver: Served 33 years as an Assistant United States Attorney and has a reputation for forging relationships with diverse communities.
"After what our kids watched during the election, I feel these heroes should have their voices heard," Morrison said.
While launching in Baltimore, Morrison hopes to expand the project that will include several other components, including creating the George Floyd Super Store franchise in Black communities, a publicly-traded store that uses local suppliers and where people in the community could buy stock, work there, and purchase products from entrepreneurs in the community. Morrison also said the project will work with the community to build the Elijah Cummings Mental Health Pharmacy Clinic in a strategic location to serve its residents.
