American Water Joins Army Representatives to Accept U.S. Department of Energy Award

American Water (NYSE: AWK), the nation’s largest publicly traded water and wastewater utility company, announced today that energy savings and water reduction initiatives at Fort Belvoir, Va., have been selected for a 2019 U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program award. Company and U.S. Army representatives accepted the award during a ceremony at the United States Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C.

The American Water and Directorate of Public Works team deployed a three-part series of water conservation measures across its operations at Fort Belvoir, beginning in 2016. The efforts combined the installation of smart water meters, preventative nitrification testing, and a Neutral Output Discharge Elimination System (NO-DES) that allowed for closed-loop water flushing.

This resulted in a significant decrease in water consumption despite growth of Fort Belvoir’s working population. Between 2017 and 2018, consumption decreased by 15 percent even as the population on base grew by 6.5 percent.

“American Water offers our Department of Defense partners innovative solutions that contribute to environmental sustainability, reduction in energy and water usage, and ultimately, cost savings,” said Military Services Group President Mark McDonough. “We thank the Federal Energy Management Program for recognition of what was truly a team effort, with contributions from American Water’s operations and supply chain groups, to the Fort Belvoir Directorate of Public Works Operation and Maintenance Division, to critical collaboration with the Virginia Department of Health.”

American Water’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles consist of keeping employees safe and injury-free, and developing them to their fullest potential; being a leader in environmental sustainability; being obsessed with outstanding water quality and customer service; and being the trusted source of everything water.

The Federal Energy and Water Management Awards recognize individuals, groups, and agencies for their outstanding contributions in the areas of energy efficiency, water conservation, and the use of advanced and renewable energy technologies at federal facilities. American Water and Fort Belvoir’s award was one of five program awards recognized in 2019.
