American Water (NYSE: AWK), the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, announced today the recipients of the company’s 2019 Environmental Grant Program awards. The company has committed to support $159,472 to 48 community projects that improve, restore or protect watersheds throughout their service areas in 11 states.

“American Water’s commitment to providing our customers with clean, safe, reliable water service also means that we share a commitment to protecting our environment,” said Susan Story, president and CEO of American Water. “We are pleased to offer this program as another way to recognize and support organizations who are making a measurable and vital impact on the protection and improvement of public water supplies in the communities we serve. We appreciate the work they do – often on a voluntary basis – and we’re hopeful these grants not only support their efforts but also inspire others to consider what role they can play in environmental stewardship.”

Established in 2005, American Water’s Environmental Grant Program offers funds for innovative, community-based environmental projects that improve, restore or protect the watersheds, surface water and/or groundwater supplies in the communities it serves. After 14 years, American Water’s environmental grant program has provided more than $1.6 million of needed support for 510 projects.

The 2019 grant recipients, which are located throughout American Water’s service areas, include the following: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
