More than 41 million Americans will hit the road on July 4th weekend, sparking a big summer trend

The summer road trip has long been the iconic idea of a U.S. vacation, and as much as the country is changing, Americans' desire to travel the country by car is as strong as ever. Almost half of Americans will head out on a road trip this summer, according to CNBC's Invest in You Spending Survey, by far the most popular form of summer travel plans, far ahead of domestic and international flights, all-inclusive resorts, cruises and camping.
