American Water Named Finalist for NJBIZ Corporate Citizen of the Year Award

American Water (NYSE: AWK), the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, has been named a finalist in the Corporate Citizen of the Year category in the 2018 NJBIZ Business of the Year awards program.

This year, American Water embarked on a series of volunteer efforts in Camden, N.J. as part of its companywide AmerICANs in Action! Month of Service throughout September. Ahead of the company’s move into its new Camden headquarters, 270 employees volunteered 1,100 hours throughout the city to support local nonprofits in a range of projects, from painting and cleaning local buildings to mentoring youth and sprucing up public spaces.

“Our employees are deeply committed to our communities and volunteer their time, resources and expertise in neighborhood organizations, charitable activities, local boards and other benevolent endeavors,” said President and CEO Susan Story. “They are little league coaches, EMTs, volunteer firefighters, and environmental leaders. They volunteer for numerous education, health, and other charitable and community causes. This year, our employees working in South Jersey were particularly excited to show our support of the Camden community and get to know our new neighbors better as we geared up to move into our headquarters there.”

In addition to volunteering, American Water sponsors workplace giving campaigns for two organizations focused on helping communities around the world. During the past 10 years, American Water has donated over $5 million to United Way efforts across the country.

In the developing world, American Water supports Water For People, an international non-profit working across nine countries to bring safe water and sanitation to four million people. This year’s successful campaign raised almost $200,000, and in the last decade, American Water has raised more than $2 million for the organization.

The American Water Charitable Foundation has donated more than $3 million to worthy organizations and efforts across the US since its inception in 2011.

The Business of the Year awards program celebrates New Jersey’s most dynamic businesses and business leaders who share a commitment to professional excellence, business growth and the community. Finalists were selected in six categories. Finalists were chosen by an independent panel of judges including: Judith Sheft, Associate Vice President, Technology & Enterprise Development, New Jersey Innovation Institute @ NJITLarry Samilow, Founder of Samilow Harvest Group, and Francis Giantomasi, Member of Chiesa Shahinian & Giantomasi PC

The Business of the Year award finalists will be recognized and the winner in each category will be announced during an awards dinner on December 3, 2018 at the Palace at Somerset Park in Somerset, NJ.
