American Water Awards Grants to Local Firefighters to Support the Safety of Local Communities

Coming off the heels of Fire Prevention Week, American Water (NYSE: AWK), the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, announced that, since its inception, the company has provided more than $1.3 million to more than 1,500 local fire departments through its Firefighter Grant program throughout American Water’s service areas in 12 states.

“The bravery exhibited by the men and women who serve as volunteer firefighters and emergency responders is inspiring,” said Vice President Brad Okoniewski, safety & environmental leadership. “We know the critical role water plays in protecting homes and businesses and we also know resources for our local heroes often runs short. Through this grant program, we are proud to support these everyday heroes and recognize their commitment to the service and protection of our customers and their families.”

American Water recognizes the importance of fire departments and water supply systems jointly providing for public safety. The Firefighting Grant program awards funds cover costs associated with purchasing personal protective gear, communications equipment, firefighting tools, water handling equipment, training and related activities and materials that will be used to support community fire protection.

The grant awards are available in American Water service areas in 12 states: Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
