Deployed world's first ‘Beacons of Honor’ at 3 military monuments during 21-mile hike
HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. - Nov. 17, 2015 - PRLog -- As the sun was setting behind the snow-covered Continental Divide seen to the west, Garrett Sweeney and his dad, Sean Sweeney, a US Marine Corps Veteran, reached their ‘Beacon of Honor: Quest to Honor’ destination - the Highlands Ranch Veterans Monument. Six hours and 51 minutes earlier they began their trek at the Colorado Veterans Monument in Denver.

At the Colorado Veterans Monument, Garrett and his dad installed the first-ever public Beacon of Honor - a Bluetooth signaling proximity beacon which brings the monument to multimedia life on the smartphones of folks nearby. Beacon of Honor, a patriotic nonprofit project, is on a mission to tell the inspiring stories of veterans and active military honored at monuments, memorials, landmarks, and flagpoles across the US.

After installing the first Beacon of Honor device and ensuring the content, pictures, video and audio about the monument’s honorees, was being delivered to their smartphones via the PlaceApp, Garrett and his dad began their 21-mile trek. This ‘Quest to Honor’ hike would be the final stage of the Beacon of Honor launch activities. The project started with much fanfare, including live local news coverage from Denver 7 ABC News, on Veterans Day.

They were on a quest to install 2 more Beacons of Honor at military monuments along their hiking route. Namely, their goal was to visit and install ever-lasting digital media tributes at the Danny Dietz Memorial in Littleton, and SSG Chris Falkel Dedication Wall within the Highlands Ranch Veterans Monument.

At mile 13, they reached the Danny Dietz Memorial, and placed the world’s second public Beacon of Honor. Then, 8 miles later, with aching feet screaming for a rest, they reached their destination. Son and Dad, proceeded down to the Dedication Wall to place a Beacon of Honor paying tribute to SSG Chris Falkel. SSG Falkel’s father, Jeff Falkel, had this to say about this patriotic project and presentation of a Beacon of Honor to his son. “One of the things I like most about the project is the knowledge about ALL Veterans, not just the fallen, that Beacon of Honor will provide. The Veterans' stories NEED to be told and NEED to be passed on before they pass on.”

While the official launch of the Beacon of Honor project was a respectful 5-day event. It was very short compared to the 10 months of volunteer work it took to get it from an idea to deployment of the first 3 Beacons of Honor. Many more deployments are planned. For that, the GivingVue nonprofit has established a crowdfunding campaign to build, deliver, and emplace 1500 new, solar-powered Beacons of Honor across the US by Memorial Day 2016.
