PEM Finds Forest Carbon Value In the Heart of Africa

By: PRLog
Planetary Emissions Management Inc. (PEM) will be participating in the Global African Investment Summit, London, December 1 & 2, seeking investor and forest landowner partnerships in the heart of Africa. PEM plans to apply its patented hardware and financial mechanisms to reforest African land and to protect some of the least disturbed forests on the planet. The PEM approach is based on direct measurement of forest carbon, eliminating estimation and pricing uncertainty for carbon products.
BOSTON - Oct. 21, 2015 - PRLog -- "Typically, forest carbon is a minor component of carbon trading but that is about to change," remarked Bruno D.V. Marino, CEO and Founder of Planetary Emissions Management Inc. PEM is seeking partnerships with African landowners to create new carbon products based on direct measurement of forest carbon flux over large land areas. The Global African Investment Summit will host Presidents and leadership from a number of African nations. "Verified forest carbon linked to actual net carbon sequestration and carbon products should be a strong incentive to encourage tree growth in Africa where deforestation is ongoing," said Marino.

CEO Marino will be presenting PEM's technologies and forest applications at the conference to identify landowners and investors to join PEM in structuring programs addressing solutions to diverse causes of deforestation. "For example, deforestation related to increased land clearing for agriculture can also be addressed in an agroforestry approach creating unique and valuable carbon products," said Marino.

The patented PEM system addresses large-scale monitoring, verification and accounting of carbon flux and uses this data to create verified carbon products. PEM's carbon products, representing 1 tonne CO2 per unit, are linked directly to a forest carbon project and will fluctuate in value according to the success and strength of the carbon sink. This approach provides incentive to manage forest growth for income rather than cutting the trees for cash.

According to PEM, the carbon products can be purchased by voluntary and compliance buyers, offering an alternative to "carbon credits" that are based on estimation and at risk for invalidation. The extensive tracts of forestland in Africa provide a large-scale opportunity for PEM and for participating African communities. In-country jobs and community support are key social outcomes of the PEM business model. Contributions to humanitarian causes will be made through PEM's PeaceKeeper Foundation.

The PEM approach is also attractive to land owners. "We pay you, the landowner, for carbon in your forests. PEM’s forest technologies are turn-key and low risk with a simple process. This is a renewed approach to the carbon market that is needed now to ensure sustainable management for African forests," remarked "JR" Rodrigues, PEM's VP of Marketing and Sales.

PEM technologies can also address GHG emissions from oil, gas and fracking operations, large scale agriculture, mega-city emissions and carbon capture and storage facilities.
