American Water Resources Receives Contract Renewal With City of Burlington, Iowa

American Water (NYSE: AWK), the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, announced that its American Water Resources subsidiary has been awarded a 5-year contract renewal as the preferred vendor to deliver service line protection to homeowners in the City of Burlington, Iowa. The protection programs provide homeowners with peace of mind from the unexpected repair costs associated with leaks and breaks in water lines, as well as clogs or blockages in sewer lines running through their property.

“We are proud of the service we are offering to Burlington homeowners and excited to continue working with them for another five years,” said American Water Resources President Malcolm Conner. “Through our elective Water Line and Sewer Line Protection Programs, homeowners have the ability to help safeguard themselves from the financial demands and stress that occurs when they experience a water or sewer line problem.”

In 2010, American Water Resources (AWR) submitted a proposal to make the program available to homeowners and was selected by the City of Burlington to offer Water Line and Sewer Line Protection Programs. AWR has since managed almost 3,000 service line contracts for the City of Burlington with an over 97 percent customer satisfaction rating. In addition, enrolled homeowners have saved approximately $180,000 in unexpected repair costs.

American Water Resources is committed to helping those who are less fortunate by supporting local community programs. The Help to Others Program (H2O) enables municipalities to use designated funds to assist homeowners who are experiencing water or sewer line issues, and not enrolled in the protection programs through American Water Resources. At the municipality’s discretion, it can determine which homeowners are eligible under the Program.

“AWR is also proud to employ local plumbing contractors to serve our customers, so the money we spend on these repairs stays in the local business community,” noted Conner.

“The customers I have serviced are very thankful they enrolled in the Service Line Protection Program,” said Randy Bennett, an AWR contractor in Burlington. “The financial peace of mind it provides, at a low cost, is very gratifying to enrolled customers. If a homeowner has a problem, all they have to do is make a simple phone call and AWR and its contractor network will handle the rest.”

Bennett is also very pleased with the benefits of working as an AWR contractor noting that, “an increased customer base, reliable payments for service work done and working with a helpful friendly staff that is trained to understand and help with issues are just some of the added benefits.”

Designed to protect homeowners from unexpected, costly service line repairs that are caused by normal wear and tear, tree roots and aging service lines, the Water Line and Sewer Line Protection Programs provide a solution for repairs that are neither the responsibility of the city’s water department nor covered by typical homeowners’ insurance. At no cost to the city and minimal cost to the customer, American Water Resources fully manages the service line protection program – from establishing a local contractor network and providing customer service, to educating homeowners about their responsibility to maintain their water and sewer lines.
