Sacramento SPCA Wins Fix-a-Leak-Week Social Media Contest

California American Water announced the Sacramento SPCA as the winner of their Fix-a-Leak-Week Social Media Contest. In honor of Fix-a-Leak Week 2014, California American Water developed a photo contest asking nonprofit organizations to share photos highlighting leak detection and water conservation efforts around their facilities.

The contest addresses the problem of tremendous amounts of water wasted each year due to leaks. More than one trillion gallons of water are lost annually nationwide through leaks occurring within homes and businesses. However, through initiatives like Fix-a-Leak Week, water utilities, local organizations and community members are working to significantly reduce this amount.

“One of the easiest ways to conserve water is to fix leaks promptly,” said California American Water President Rob MacLean. “Even a dripping faucet can waste hundreds of gallons a month.”

Having received the most votes for their photo via a social media voting page, the Sacramento SPCA will receive a $1,000 cash donation from California American Water. “At the Sacramento SPCA, saving money and resources go hand in hand with saving animals,” said Community Engagement Coordinator Julianne Byer. “Often times, these minor leaks are quick, effortless and easy to fix, helping save hundreds of gallons of water each month.”

Many organizations participated in California American Water’s Fix-a-Leak-Week Social Media Contest, showing their environmental stewardship and initiatives in helping protect and preserve our most precious resource. Organizations include:

  • Imperial Beach Girls Softball League
  • Monterey Business Council
  • Redwood Empire Food Bank
  • Temple City Chamber of Commerce
  • Thousand Oaks Teen Center
  • Sacramento SPCA

“Sustainable practices promote teamwork and set good examples for community members,” said MacLean. “I want to personally thank all participants for your commitment to conservation, environmental sustainability and your efforts in working to ensure water is available for future generations to come.”
