This unique treadmill offers pain-free activity for recreational and competitive runners. “In the past, this type of equipment would have been reserved for high-profile athletes or sports teams, but this technology has made it available to every runner,” said Director of Physical Therapy Services Dr. Ray VanWye. “What's exciting for us is that we are the first physical therapist-owned clinic to bring the AlterG® to central Ohio. It's exciting; we just need to get the word out to the running community that this technology is available and affordable.”
The treadmill allows users to safely lighten their body weight, which takes pressure off the injured area. Most importantly, the setup allows for normal running and performance. Dr. VanWye sees this technology changing runners’ lives. He is currently working with a runner, Luke, and is using the treadmill as a part of his rehabilitation. “I ran a 5k this past weekend, my first time in over a year. It surprised me how strong my legs were. Before, running was unnatural and I couldn’t get my stride. Now, I feel normal, I’ve got a natural stride, and I’m pain free. I was able to run while I was still recovering because of the AlterG®, which definitely gave me a head start,” said Luke. “He is a great example of someone who can benefit from unweighted or ‘Anti-Gravity’ running,” said Dr. VanWye. “He ran too many miles and ended up with a stress fracture in his leg. Since the treadmill has three cameras, we can monitor his running form and make sure he doesn't injure himself again.”
A referral is not necessary to see a physical therapist in Ohio and the majority of insurances will cover physical therapy services if medically necessary. Membership rates are available as well.
