PR Log - Dec 04, 2012 - Saturday, December 15, 2012, First Home Alliance will host a More Help for Homeowners event at 10 a.m. at The First Baptist Church of Manassas, VA. At the event church leaders will offer hope and help to those hardest hit by the collapse of the housing market. Keynote speaker, Dr. DeForest Soaries, author of dFree-Breaking Free From Financial Slavery will discuss how families can get their financial houses in order, for 2013.
At this event First Home Alliance will partner with the United Way of the National Capital Area (NCA) to increase financial stability amongst individuals and families. United Way NCA works to put the security that comes from financial stability and affordable housing within everyone's reach.
“Financial recovery for families will begin as we start to put our financial houses back in order” said Dr. DeForest Soaries. “Economic stability must be grounded in the knowledge of how to be a good financial steward. We need to educate our communities.”
Keynote speaker, Dr. DeForest Soaries, author of dFree-Breaking Free From Financial Slavery, and others will help homeowners to prevent foreclosure and get free mortgage assistance. In addition, homeowners who were part of a foreclosure action on their primary residence in 2009 or 2010 will learn if they may be eligible for a free Independent Foreclosure Review and compensation or other remedy if the review finds that they were financially injured because of errors in the foreclosure process.
"We have found that many consumers do not understand the Independent Foreclosure Review (IFR) program and have not submitted a request for review even though they are in fact, eligible," said Larry Laws, Executive Director, First Home Alliance. "We believe that by explaining the program and answering questions we can encourage borrowers to take advantage of this effort before the December 31 deadline for requesting for review."
The Independent Foreclosure Review came out of a legal agreement between federal bank regulators and 14 mortgage servicing companies over abusive mortgage servicing practices. The IFR is giving homeowners an opportunity to have an unbiased third party review their foreclosure and determine if they might qualify for a cash payout of up to $125,000.
The More Help for Homeowners event will have certified staff to assist attendees in determining if they qualify for the Independent Foreclosure Review, obtaining the review form, completing and submitting it. Attendees will also be educated about their options in moving forward. In addition, First Home Alliance will provide assistance for homeowners who are currently in default.
First Home Alliance is a HUD-approved nonprofit housing counseling agency servicing low-to-moderate income and underserved communities in Northern Virginia. The organization specializes in homeownership development, foreclosure intervention and financial empowerment.
