California American Water’s Folsom Pump Station Receives APWA Award

California American Water’s Folsom Pump Station recently received a Project of the Year Award from the American Public Works Association Sacramento Chapter (APWA). The award was given in the Large Agency Division - Environmental Category for a project in the $500,000-$2M construction cost range. This award recognizes public works projects that demonstrate excellence in management, administration, design, construction, community relations, and the alliance among the managing agency and the consultant/engineer/contractor that worked together to successfully complete the project.

The Folsom Pump Station Project was completed in June of 2012 and provides additional surface water supplies to suburban area customers. The pump station will likely open up to the company water systems located in the Rosemont, La Riveria and Rancho Cordova areas early next year. The new pumping station has enabled these systems to receive purchased water from the City of Sacramento. Previously the area relied almost solely on local groundwater to supply a population of approximately 56,000. Conjunctive use of surface and groundwater provides environmental and water quality benefits by allowing greater use of surface water supplies during wet months.

The Folsom Pump Station was a portion of a larger scope project that cost $3.2 million. The pump station was approximately $2 million of this project and an associated pipeline accounts for the remaining budget. This project is located at the intersection of South Watt Avenue and Folsom Boulevard and is able to pump more than 3 million gallons of water per day, which is about 35 percent of area’s average daily use.

“We are honored to receive this Project of the Year Award from the APWA,” said Andy Soulé, California American Water’s Northern Division general manager. “It is great to be recognized for the improvement to our district’s water supply that allows us to better manage water supply and reliability in the coming decades.”
