AstraZeneca Helps More Patients Receive Free Medicine in 2011

AstraZeneca (NYSE: AZN) announced today that it provided $1.1 billion in savings last year to more than 569,000 patients in the United States who participate in its AZ&Me Prescription Savings Programs. AstraZeneca saved patients a total of $3.4 billion on 15 million prescriptions since the economic downturn took hold in 2008.

“A record number of patients are filling a record number of prescriptions in our prescription savings programs,” said Marion McCourt, Chief Operating Officer, AstraZeneca US. “We will continue to work with health providers, community groups and other caregivers to ensure patients have access to the medicines they need.”

Participation in AZ&Me has steadily increased over the past three years. In 2011, AZ&Me served 569,823 patients, an increase of 29 percent since 2008, and provided 4.5 million prescriptions, an increase of 68 percent since 2008.

AstraZeneca recently broadened the AZ&Me income eligibility criteria to help more patients qualify to receive their AstraZeneca medicines for free. Prescription assistance through AstraZeneca is available in three ways:

  • Individuals without Prescription Drug Coverage: AstraZeneca provides free medicines to qualifying individuals with an annual income at or below $35,000 and families of four with an annual household income at or below $70,000.
  • Part D Beneficiaries: AstraZeneca provides free medicines to qualifying Medicare Part D beneficiaries with an annual income at or below $35,000 and couples with an annual household income at or below $48,000. Medicare Part D beneficiaries can have their medicines mailed to their home or physician’s office.
  • Healthcare Facilities: AstraZeneca provides free medicines to qualifying non-profit organizations, such as disproportionate share hospitals, community health centers and community free clinics. This program helps provide medicines to qualifying patients at the time and place of treatment.
