California American Water Helps Boys & Girls Club Save ¼ Million Gallons of Water

Over the past several months, California American Water, in partnership with local contractors, plumbers and appliance manufacturers, has completed a full water conservation retrofit for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Monterey County facility in Seaside. The company donated more than $20,000 in water-saving devices and services to the non profit, including replacement of the club’s toilets with state-of-the-art 1.0 gallon per flush models, and installation of waterless urinals, low-flow sink aerators and a weather based irrigation controller that will reduce the club’s outdoor water use.

“These renovations not only help to educate our youth about the value of water and the need to conserve it here on the Peninsula, but they also reduce our water bill, making more of our donors money available for services to local families,” said Boys and Girls Clubs of Monterey County President/CEO Donna Ferarro.

The improvements were provided to the club at a significant savings due to the generosity of the conservation partners who worked with California American Water. Niagra Conservation donated all the toilets and A&R Plumbing and RB Construction additionally donated time, labor and equipment to reduce the project cost.

“It’s great to be able to help a fantastic organization like the Boys and Girls Club,” said California American Water General Manager Eric Sabolsice. “This project not only helps reduce water use in our community, it sets an example of the type of savings that can be achieved through use of efficient, water-saving technology. At the end of the first year, we will have saved three-quarters of an acre foot of water at this facility alone, without impacting their health, safety or recreational uses of water.”

California American Water estimates the Boys and Girls Clubs of Monterey County will save more than 250,000 gallons of water per year as a result of the retrofit, which equates to thousands of dollars on their water bill.

Recently, as part of its landscape grant program, California American Water also sponsored water-saving improvements including turf replacement and installation of low-flow drip irrigation at Cutino Park, a City of Seaside property adjacent to the Boys and Girls Club of Monterey County. The company also makes an annual donation of 100 Thanksgiving turkeys to the Boys and Girls Club of Monterey County as part of the state-wide program, Operation Gobble. California American Water employees also donate their time to serve the Thanksgiving meal at the club each year.

The Boys and Girls Club of Monterey County has over 20 community partners and 400 volunteers who work to provide programs and activities to the members of the club. The organization serves over 225,000 free meals every year and offers our community’s youth a safe place to learn, recreate and develop important life skills.
