California American Water Urges Customers to Protect Themselves from People Posing as Utility Workers

California American Water is reminding customers to check for identification before allowing utility workers on their property or into their home.

Normal operations do not require our employees or contractors to enter customers’ homes or backyards unannounced unless the customer has contacted the company for a specific service issue or has a water main or service line running through their backyard. Residents should never allow access to individuals who are unable to produce proper company identification.

“We are committed to the safety and well-being of our customers as well as our employees,” said company president Rob MacLean. “Accordingly, we are reminding residents to follow a few simple steps we’ve provided for them to ensure that only authorized employees are granted access to their property.”

California American Water asks customers to please take these simple precautions to keep themselves, their homes, and their businesses safe from utility impostors:

  • Insist on seeing identification: California American Water employees carry an official company identification badge. Contractors carry their own company photo identification and may also carry a California American Water temporary badge. Customers should ask to see both a company identification badge and a driver’s license or other state-issued ID to confirm information on the official company badge. If you’re suspicious, keep your door locked, call 911 and call California American Water at 1-888-237-1333 to report the incident.
  • If the person at your door cannot show you an official California American Water identification badge or if you have any doubts, do not let that person into your home or business. Close and lock your door, call 911, and call California American Water at 1-888-237-1333 to report the incident.
  • If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be the water company and are suspicious, please contact California American Water at 1-888-237-1333 to report the incident.
  • Remember, you decide who enters your home or business. Take the time to ensure that the individual at your door is truly on official business for California American Water.
