California American Water Improves System Reliability through Valve Assessment Pilot Program

During the month of October, California American Water will embark on a preventative maintenance program to restore and exercise approximately 500 valves in its water distribution system. Valves attached to underground mains allow service crews to stop flow through parts of the system in the event of a main break or other instances requiring major repairs. Valves must be turned periodically to ensure functionality and prolong their useful life.

“This project is part of our continuing efforts to improve the reliability of the water system,” said California American Water General Manager Craig Anthony. “We have more than 12,000 valves in our system; some dating back to as early as 1905. They’re still good valves, but they need to be exercised to ensure they’re kept in good working order.”

When water leaks and main breaks occur, valves are closed to isolate the portion of the water system in need of repair, thereby reducing the number of customers affected by the break and the amount of water lost. If valves are not regularly turned they can stick or break, adding significant repair time and expense. Replacement costs can range from $5,000 to $15,000 per valve.

The company’s Valve Assessment Pilot Program is being executed by Wachs Water Services, a leading distribution system solutions provider. Wachs crews will inspect, exercise, document and GPS map water distribution system valves, using state-of-the-art hydraulic technology that measures and applies the proper torque required to un-stick older valves.
