Grace Awards College Scholarships

W. R. Grace & Co. (NYSE: GRA) is awarding ten scholarships for the 2010-2011 academic year to graduating high school students located in Alabama, Connecticut, Maryland, New Hampshire, South Dakota and Calgary, Alberta.

Each scholarship is valued at $2,000 annually (up to a total of $8,000 over a four-year period, based on academic results) and covers tuition and related fees. In addition to the new scholarships, Grace is also funding 28 renewal scholarships in the coming academic year. Since 1989, the company has awarded more than $1.6 million in scholarships through its philanthropic affiliate, the Grace Foundation.

“For more than two decades, we have offered scholarships to high-achieving students,” commented W. Brian McGowan, Chairman of the Grace Foundation and Senior Vice President of W. R. Grace & Co. “We are proud to continue the tradition with these incoming college freshmen, who plan to pursue degrees crucial to our communities, ranging from nursing to chemistry to law.”

Scholarship recipients are selected based on a combination of factors, including academic performance and participation in school and community activities, work experience and recommendations.

This year’s new recipients are:

Meghan Albal

Meghan plans to pursue a pre-law degree from George Washington University in Washington, DC. She graduated from Glenelg High School in Glenelg, Maryland, where she was a leader in mock trials.

Alexander Bae

Alex graduated from the Math, Science and Computer Science Magnet Program hosted at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. He was a member of the varsity swim team, President of the Student Government Association and Captain of the Debate Team, as well as a member of the National Honor Society and the National Spanish Honor Society. He earned a cumulative GPA of 4.0. He is the recipient of the National Merit Scholarship, Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship, Maryland State Distinguished Scholar Award, Presidential Scholar Award, National AP Scholar Award and Superintendent's Award for Meritorious Service. Alex is enrolled at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut and intends to study Political Science and Environmental Engineering, with his sights set on a career in Law.

Erica Coomes

A graduate of Roosevelt High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Erica plans to pursue a Nursing degree at South Dakota State University in Brookings. While in high school, Erica was a member of the National Honor Society and recipient of the President's Education Award and the Regents' Scholar Award. She was also a member of the varsity volleyball team and earned several awards, including being selected to the All Academic Team and the All State Tournament Team.

William P. Fitzsimmons

Patrick graduated with honors from Centennial High School in Calgary, Alberta, Canada where he earned the Coyote Award, one of the school’s three major awards for leadership, volunteerism, community involvement and academic achievement. Patrick also earned scholarships from the Rutherford Foundation and the University of Calgary, where he will be pursuing a double major in Political Science and History.

Cassandra Janowski

A Cum Laude graduate of Notre Dame Preparatory School in Towson, Maryland, Cassandra is enrolled at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her major is undecided at this time; however, she is considering a science-based degree.

Emily Luco

Emily graduated from Mount de Sales Academy in Catonsville, Maryland and will be attending York College of Pennsylvania in York as a Nursing student.

Caitlyn Madore

Caitlyn graduated from Hopkinton High School in Hopkinton, New Hampshire and will be attending Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. Her major is undecided at this time.

Kelsey McKown

Kelsey is a graduate of Centennial High School in Ellicott City, Maryland and will be working toward a degree in Mathematics from Salisbury University in Salisbury, Maryland.

Ian Saverse

Ian is an honors graduate of the Spain Park High School in Hoover, Alabama. He achieved a GPA of 4.0 or higher for four years and was named a 2009 AP Scholar with Honors. In addition, he was a member of the National Honor Society, French National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta (Math National Honor Society). He will be attending the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and intends to pursue a major in International Business Management and Economics.

Michael Wilner

Michael is an honors graduate of the Hill Regional Career Magnate High School in New Haven, Connecticut. While a student there, he was a member of the National Honor Society and captain of a local robotics club, as well as active mentor for younger students. He will be attending Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut as a Chemistry major.

Support is focused on meeting basic needs, such as shelter, food, healthcare and education. The Grace Foundation Scholarship Program supports the sons and daughters of Grace employees in the United States and Canada. It is independently administered by Scholarship America, a department of Scholarship Management Services, a national nonprofit educational support and student aid service organization.
