U.S. EPA and American Water Wrap Up National We're for Water Campaign in New Jersey

WHAT:

On Monday, August 2, in Chatham Township, New Jersey, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense program and American Water—the nation’s largest publicly-traded water services provider—will culminate the national We’re for Water campaign with a water-saving competition between two New Jersey families. The two families will be pitted against each other to see who can save the most water in one week. WaterSense partner American Water will monitor their customers’ water use and the families will show off what they learned by battling each other in a water-saving competition.

The multi-year We're for Water Campaign kicked off with a two-week national road trip to encourage U.S. consumers to save water by making small changes at home including the use of WaterSense labeled products. The tour features Flo, the We're for Water "spokesgallon," a symbolic one-gallon bottle of water saved from the kick-off in Los Angeles. Flo traveled the country stopping at national landmarks, taking photos with tourists, educating citizens about water efficiency, and recording the trip via Facebook, Twitter, widgets and the We’re for Water website.

WHY:

Between 1950 and 2000, the U.S. population nearly doubled while the public demand for water more than tripled. At least 36 states are anticipating local, regional, or statewide water shortages by 2013. Using WaterSense labeled products and water-efficient behaviors helps save water for the future.

VISUALS:

The competing households will battle to see which family can save the most water using the following outdoor demonstrations:

-- Saver Shaver: Two Dads compete to see who can shave using the least amount of water. Sink will have a collection system which will show just how much water was used

-- The Most Efficient Shower: Two teens/kids compete to see who can wash and rinse their hair the most times in three minutes using a powerful WaterSense labeled showerhead
-- Have I Sprung a Leak? We’ll set up two toilets, two moms run a test with dye to check for leaks
