Community-Based Organizations Serving Populations with Low COVID Vaccination Rates Receive More Than $4.5 Million in Grants from Health Net

Grants are the result of Health Net’s community-first approach; funds will support AltaMed’s successful and culturally tailored “¡Ándale! ¿Qué esperas?,” campaign, Visión y Compromiso’s promotoras effort, among others

Health Net, one of California’s longest serving and most experienced Medi-Cal partners, awarded more than $4.5 million to community-based nonprofits to help vaccinate communities hardest hit by COVID and increase vaccine equity.

“After serving California’s most vulnerable residents for more than four decades, we understand that healthcare is best delivered locally,” said Martha Santana-Chin, Medi-Cal President of Health Net. “When we set out to dispel myths about the COVID-19 vaccines in regions with the lowest vaccination rates, we partnered with nonprofits that are trusted voices in their communities, and hand in hand, we’ve made positive change across California.”

To increase vaccination rates across the state, Health Net intensely focused on a community-first approach. The company worked with established community organizations including Health Begins, Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE), and Visión y Compromiso. Together, the organizations have worked with Health Net to identify and partner with other local organizations where Health Net’s expertise, analytics, and resources could make a meaningful difference and enable neighborhood advocates.

In total, Health Net gave more than 80 grants to community-based organizations throughout the state. Among them, AltaMed Health Services (AltaMed) received $1.6 million in funding to support their community, broadcast, and digital outreach campaign to help thousands of Latinos in communities heavily impacted from the pandemic to make COVID-19 vaccine appointments.

Other grantees could use their new funding in many ways to increase local vaccination rates, including:

  • Family-focused events with COVID-19 and flu vaccines available
  • Local canvassing and outreach to support vaccination
  • Working with schools and Boys and Girls Clubs to educate and vaccinate members
