Dani Vachon: Promoting Environmental Sustainability and Social Change Through Art and Design

VANCOUVER, BC / ACCESSWIRE / December 7, 2022 / Art and design can play an important role in raising awareness about sustainability and driving social change. Art engages emotions and has the potential to provoke powerful reactions. Dani Vachon has used her artistic and design skills to support many organizations that are inspiring social and cultural change through the use of advanced technologies and policy initiatives.

Her firm, The Beacon Design Collective Inc, where she wears the dual hats of managing director and creative director, has conceptualized and developed distinctive communication campaigns for organizations like Oxfam Canada, Carbon Engineering and the Zero Waste Strategy of the City of Vancouver. Through these campaigns in the form of motion graphics, powerpoint presentation decks, brochures and annual reports for companies, Dani Vachon has proved that it is possible for everyone to make their own contribution to improving the environmental state of the world.

Dani is not a newcomer to the sustainability scene. She was a member of the Green Club in high school and played an active role in planting the school's garden and implementing its recycling program. Dani started out her career in art by going to art school and then switched to graphic design as it allowed her to combine her love for technology with art. However, working at an advertising agency proved to be unfulfilling as she wanted to create an impact with her art. She moved on to pursue a career in the music industry for 12 years, during which she started a record label, promoted hundreds of concerts, managed bands, launched an arts festival, and opened three music venues, while also doing the graphic design for record covers and event promotions.

Though she advocated for recycling stations at events, the amount of food wasted and the damage they caused to the environment prompted her to set up Beacon in 2013. Beacon supports clients engaged in social justice and emerging sustainability technology by creating highly impactful, clear and functional designed assets.

Currently, Beacon works primarily with clients working on green technologies, and government organizations to create assets for their recycling and zero waste initiatives. Clients that Beacon has worked with on sustainability campaigns include Carbon Engineering and the Zero Waste Initiative of the City of Vancouver. On the social justice front, Beacon has worked with institutions promoting the cause of marginalized people, abused women and juvenile delinquents. A few examples include Oxfam Canada and the Real Estate Foundation of British Columbia which supports conservation by buying and protecting private lands in British Columbia.

Dani also practices what she preaches at her own firm. Beacon has received the highest level of certification, platinum certification, from the Green Business Bureau and has planted almost 300,000 trees since 2021 alone to offset its carbon footprint. This is more than many leading corporations have done.

Commenting on how her firm supports sustainability and social justice, Dani Vachon said, "Many people admire the work that my clients do when it comes to sustainability or social justice. But in order to engage with more people and create an emotional pull, it is important for them to have great design. This plays a key role in attracting the attention of investors, donors and the general public. These are organizations that are working very hard to solve the problems that we ourselves have created. I feel that it is important for everyone to contribute in their own way to find solutions to issues like global warming and plastic waste. Through Beacon, we are in our own way, building trust and credibility for people who are fighting for social justice and sustainability."
