Esteemed Economist and Global Sustainability Leader to Help Advance Private Sector Role in Catalyzing Climate Finance
Angeleno Group, the pioneering Los Angeles-based investment firm providing venture capital and growth equity to clean energy and climate solutions companies, announced today that Sir Andrew Steer, the prominent economist and leader in sustainable development and climate change advocacy, has joined the firm's Board of Advisors.
Sir Andrew joins Angeleno Group’s distinguished advisory board following the addition of fellow board member former U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen earlier this year. Other members of Angeleno’s Board include former U.S. Secretary of Energy and MIT physicist Ernest Moniz, Nobel Laureate and Alphabet board member Frances Arnold, and economist and former Dean of the Berkeley Haas School of Business Laura Tyson. His appointment reflects Angeleno Group’s ongoing commitment to working with the best and brightest minds focused on energy transition and decarbonization to identify new investment opportunities and continue to scale existing portfolio companies.
Currently, Sir Andrew serves as a Distinguished Research Professor of the Practice in Environment and Economics at Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service and The Earth Commons, Georgetown’s Institute for Environment & Sustainability. He also serves as a Professor in Practice at the London School of Economics and Political Science’s new Global School of Sustainability. Previously, he was the founding president and CEO of the Bezos Earth Fund, where he built and led the team, advancing its mission through strategic grantmaking, convening, and advocacy.
A Long-Standing Champion for Climate Action
Throughout his career, Sir Andrew has worked across a variety of ecosystems, including national government, multilateral institutions, NGOs as well as the private sector, to accelerate decarbonization and climate solutions. In his roles, he has emphasized the urgent need for significant capital investment to address climate change and advance the energy transition.
“We are honored to have Andrew join our Board of Advisors. His expertise in global sustainable development and climate finance will be instrumental as our team expands our role in providing growth capital for next generation clean energy and climate solutions businesses,” said Daniel Weiss, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Angeleno Group. “Andrew has championed the important role of the private sector in advancing the world’s climate agenda — transitioning to a low-carbon economy, promoting sustainable development practices, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth. We are at a critical inflection point in the sustainability-focused global financial markets. With historic levels of deal flow and opportunities to invest at attractive valuations, we view the current market landscape as one of the most compelling moments to deploy capital since we launched the firm in 2001. We believe that Andrew's judgment, experience and knowledge will be immensely helpful in that effort.”
“For over 20 years, Angeleno Group has been at the forefront of investing in innovative businesses supporting the energy transition and global sustainability. I am proud to join their esteemed Board of Advisors,” said Sir Andrew Steer. “The private sector’s leadership and investment in climate action are essential to addressing climate change and fostering a prosperous, resilient global economy.”
In 2024, Sir Andrew was knighted in recognition of “his sustained contribution as one of the world’s best-known practice-based leaders in global sustainable development economics, with a focus on climate change and poverty reduction.” In 2024, he was named on the Forbes inaugural list of the Top 50 Global Sustainability Leaders. He joined the Bezos Earth Fund from the World Resources Institute, where he served as President and CEO for eight years. Previously, he served as the World Bank’s Special Envoy for Climate Change and as Director General at the UK Department for International Development. This followed 10 years in East Asia, where he served as the Head of the World Bank in Vietnam and Indonesia.
Sir Andrew is a board member of the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, a member of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development, a member of the UK Foreign Secretary’s Foreign Policy Board, and a Global Agenda Trustee for the World Economic Forum, where he co-chairs its Global Futures Council on Innovative Finance for Climate and Nature. He has served on the advisory boards of Bank of America and IKEA and was co-chair of HSBC's climate advisory committee. Sir Andrew was educated at the University of St Andrews, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Cambridge, and received his PhD in Economics and Finance.
