PBU Awarded The Viking Link Project

PBU has successfully been awarded highly competitive contracts for the lucrative Viking Link project. The project is the biggest of its kind in the world right now, with many businesses bidding to get a contract.

April 14, 2021 / /

PBU has officially been announced as owners of three contracts for the highly anticipated Viking Link project. The company was awarded the Horizontal Directional Drilling works, as well as Trenching installation and Joint Bay construction on behalf of Balfour Beatty. It's an incredible achievement for the company, working on one of the most ambitious projects the world has ever seen.

Armed with a fleet of HDD rigs, excavators, and a recently acquired trackway matting division, PBU is ready to tackle the massive project that lies ahead. Numerous specialist teams have already begun working on installing the 67km UK cable route. The entire works package contains the installation of around 200 HDD's, 60km of trenching, and a massive construction of 58 joint bays. It will be a significant challenge, but one that PBU is more than ready to live up to.

A 706km Interconnector Project Linking Britain and Denmark
The Viking Link is a 706km interconnector project that's being constructed on behalf of the National Grid and Energinet. It aims to produce a 1400 MW high-voltage DC electricity link between Britain and Denmark. It will begin in the Bicker Fen substation in Lincolnshire and travel all the way up to the Revsing substation in southern Jutland, Denmark.

This is one of the most ambitious energy projects the world has ever seen. As of right now, it is certainly the biggest in the world. Overall, the project will involve the construction of a converter station in the UK and Denmark, while also calling upon underwater installations. Submarine and underground cables will be installed as the link between the two substations.

A Move For More Effective Renewable Energy
When the Viking Link is up and running, it will provide more effective use of renewable energy, providing greater access to electricity produced in a more environmentally friendly way. The idea is that renewable energy can be accessed as and when it's needed.

The project is also stated to help energy security, giving both countries access to more electricity if there are any shortages. As a result, the competition for all of the contracts available for this project was extremely intense. PBU is over the moon and honoured to have been awarded not one, but three highly sought after contracts. Work has already begun, and it shall continue for the foreseeable future until the Viking Link is complete.
