Washington, D.C, District of Columbia Mar 19, 2021 (Issuewire.com) - The Board of Directors of the Bar Association of the District of Columbia (BADC) has approved a resolution in support of H.R. 51 - the D.C. Statehood Bill. Sponsored by D.C. Delegate, the Hon. Eleanor Holmes Norton, 227 co-sponsors in the U.S. House of Representatives, and 40 co-sponsors in the U.S. Senate (S. 51), the bill would grant statehood to the District of Columbia as the 51st state in the union. Notably, H.R. 51 would: (1) provide District residents with a congressional representation of two U.S. senators and one voting member in the U.S. House of Representatives; (2) elevate the office of the mayor to the office of the governor; (3) transform the D.C. Council into a state legislative assembly; (4) designate new geographic boundaries for the residential and commercial areas of the city as the State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth; and (5) preserve the boundaries of the Federal Enclave as the District of Columbia under the U.S. Constitution.
"A founding principle of our Republic is that taxation without representation is contrary to what it means to be an American. For far too long, however, the more than 700,000 residents of the District of Columbia have been denied equal representation in our federal government despite paying the most in federal income taxes per capita than any other state in the country. District residents also contribute to the security, fabric, and prosperity of our nation as past and present members of the armed forces, jurors, faith leaders, first responders, essential workers, teachers, attorneys, judges, doctors, nurses, accountants, architects, engineers, business owners and executives, retailers, artists, machinists, and technicians, among other professions. H.R. 51 establishes a new state, preserves the Federal Enclave as the District of Columbia, and rights a wrong for all District residents and business owners once and for all.
