How to Make Friends as Grown-ups During a Pandemic

New York City, New York Feb 15, 2021 (Issuewire.com) - It's easy to make friends in high school and college, but once you're in your mid-twenties or in your thirties, making friends becomes more of a challenge. Although Millennials have access to social media, smartphones, and all the ways to connect with people, many young people have a challenging time making friends once they are adults. If you have moved or maybe your main friend group has all moved away, you could find yourself wondering how to go about meeting new people.

"Making friends is so much harder as adults because we no longer have the structure of school," said Kristina Hallett, co-author of Millennials' Guide to Relationships, which addresses making friendships. Dr. Hallett and co-author Dr. Jennifer Wisdom are both clinical psychologists. Dr. Hallett is a Connecticut-based therapist who specializes in interpersonal relationships. Dr. Wisdom is a Portland, Oregon- and New York City-based researcher who studies and writes about the Millennial experience.

"The pandemic has made making friends even more difficult," said Dr. Wisdom. "There are still options for getting 'out there' virtually and meeting new people." Drs. Hallett and Wisdom describe the importance of remaining open to meeting new people and being available to innovative venues for meeting others. Pandemic-friendly ways to make new friends can include community group zoom calls; organizations and clubs, such as Toastmasters, that have shifted to online meetings; Meetup groups in your interest; and of course online dating venues. Joining calls and chatting with people you find interesting can lead to offline friendships.

Millennials' Guide to Relationships also describes that the nature of friendships changes over time. "Many of us are evaluating our friendships in a different light during the pandemic," said Dr. Hallett. "Although some friendships last forever, many times as we evolve and grow as adults, so do our friendships. It's normal and appropriate to sometimes drift away from some friends and to bring new friends into your life."

Millennials' Guide to Relationships, released February 14, 2021, provides Millennials and others with tips and tools on how to have happy and healthy relationships, including with friends, work colleagues, romantic partnerships, and with ourselves. The book, published by Winding Pathway Books as part of the Millennials' Guides series, is available on Amazon.com and IngramSpark.
