Los Angeles, Dec 1, 2020 (Issuewire.com) - IBDMoms, a community created by and for mothers touched by inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), is announcing their 501(c)(3) non-profit status this week.

Founded by health advocates and moms, Brooke Abbott and Amber J Tresca, IBDMoms began as two friends sharing their personal experiences with moms affected by IBD. After receiving a great response from their first Twitter chat, they decided to create IBDMoms to help strengthen the community of moms within the IBD space.

"The date of our announcement, December 1st, is special because it is the first day of Crohn's & Colitis Awareness Week," said Brooke. Crohn's & Colitis Awareness Week has been observed during the first week in December starting in 2011 when it was created through U.S. Senate Resolution 199, 'A resolution supporting the goals and ideals of Crohn's & Colitis Awareness Week, December 1-7.'

IBD, which includes Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and indeterminate colitis, is the umbrella term for these incurable, immune-mediated diseases. While these conditions primarily affect the digestive tract, they can also lead to extra-intestinal manifestations that have significant detrimental effects on quality of life.

As a non-profit organization, IBDMoms looks forward to supporting moms who live with IBD and moms of kids who live with IBD. Through their social media channels, their closed Facebook Group, and their web site, IBDMoms is able to connect mothers in the IBD community to one another. These connections provide support on topics that are unique to IBDMoms, such as treatments during pregnancy, coping with the signs and symptoms of flare-ups, living with an ostomy or an ileal pouch, and caring for a child with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.

"As we bring awareness to the difficulties of living IBD, we will also highlight what IBD Motherhood looks like, from the perspective of both patients and caregivers," Brooke said.

About IBDMoms

IBDMoms started with a hashtag. IBDMoms is a safe space for moms affected by IBD (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or indeterminate colitis) as patients and/or caregivers to come and commune, chat and cry, ask and answer, laugh, and laugh some more.

IBDMoms maintains its main office in Los Angeles with a satellite office in Connecticut. The co-founders of IBDMoms, Brooke and Amber, are available for interviews.
