Ms. Tiscareño-Sato, a former English Language Learner, will provide attendees a unique perspective of being born female to Mexican immigrants and how she came to receive an Air Force ROTC scholarship to Berkeley that launched her military aviation career as an officer. The White House honored her as a Champion of Change, Woman Veteran Leader two years ago for her creative work as a publisher to raise educational expectations for Latino students. At the National Press Club, the speaker will share highlights and benefits of her nine years of service that included thousands of hours airborne in a KC-135R refueling tanker, an Air Medal earned over Iraq and assignments with NATO in Italy and the U.S. Embassy in Ecuador.
"A White House staffer suggested we invite Graciela to this panel because her family's journey, her military service and professional accomplishments will perfectly amplify the critical intersection between immigration and military service that hasn't been fully explored yet," said Octavio A. Hinojosa Mier, Veterans for New Americans Coordinator at National Immigration Forum. "Ms. Tiscareño-Sato will make critical connections for our attendees on Monday so our policy makers will begin to appreciate the huge pool of young immigrants (and their future children) who can play critical roles in our national defense and security today and for decades to come, both as enlisted members and in the officer ranks. Allowing undocumented youth a chance to earn legal status through military service is a logical and mutually beneficial step that's needed."
