Electric Assist Folding Bike Under 33 Pounds On Kickstarter Through Tuesday, September 20

By: PRLog
Kickstarter has helped Bike Friday launch their cargo bike, the Haul-a-day. Now Bike Friday has already hit 150% of their goal on their second Kickstarter campaign. To celebrate they've added an Electric Assist version of their new lightest ever folding bike, the PakiT.
EUGENE, Ore. - Sept. 19, 2016 - PRLog -- Bike Friday introduced the lightest, smallest, best riding, folding city bike ever just 4 weeks ago on Kickstarter. The pakiT folding city bike was an instant hit and met the campaign goal of $50,000 within 7 hours.

During the course of the campaign, visitors to the Kickstarter page for the pakiT often inquired about the possibility of getting the bike with an electric assist. The company went to work. President Hanna Scholz announced Friday: "We have had extensive discussions with Grin Technologies in Canada, and with their help, we have created an electric assist version of the pakiT. The result is that we believe we have the lightest folding ebike that offers an excellent ride. The resulting bike folds small enough to fit in a backpack."

Scholz continued with the news that this version of the pakiT would be added to the Kickstarter campaign in two ways: "You can order the 3-speed, belt driven version of the pakiT on the campaign page. Alternatively, you can order any of the remaining bikes available on the Kickstarter campaign page and add the electric assist package to your custom build after the campaign is over."

The Grin Technology solution packs the motor into the front hub of the bike and adds the battery to a bag behind the seat. This means that the front wheel, battery, and controls can be removed in less than 5 minutes. You can then replace the front wheel with a standard (included) front wheel, and you have a super, light-weight (19.8 pound) folding city bike. You are getting two bikes in one.

Grin has 10 years of experience in a wide range of electric assist kits, which is why we chose to partner with them to make the e-pakiT a reality. Here are details of what we've cooked up:

Front hub motor, twist throttle, 20mph top speed, 25mile range, 12lbs weight for whole kit, Retail price $1050. And Grin Tech is working on a special battery that is legal to fly with! We will be one of the first to get it.

The retail on this unit will be $1050, but will be discounted on Kickstarter bikes at only $890. All of the details are available at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/greengear/pakit-city-bike-lightest-folding-bike-ever-fits-in?token=a7d8123b.

The e-assist upgrade will be available for shipping January 2017.
