Music in the Form of a Prescription Pill?

By: PRLog
Campaign pushing for changes in the practice of the psychiatric industry.
PRLog - June 11, 2015 - LOS ANGELES -- ‘Music As Medicine’, is a campaign with a focus to educate the public about Music Therapy & its positive effects on the Mentally Ill, as well as raise funds for various non-profit music organizations. The partners of the campaign include ‘Electronic Music Alliance' - An organization created by Janine & Ken Jordan (The Crystal Method) with a goal to activate social change programs, which are important to the EDM community & the upcoming Music Therapy/DJ documentary ‘Before We Were Kings’, which stars EDM artist Moby, Wolfgang Gartner, & Sander Kleinenberg. The campaign will involve multiple initiatives including Social Media outreach, media appearances by the campaign’s partnering organizations as well as stars of the documentary, contest, & events centered around World Mental Health Day - October 10th, 2015.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. (43.7 mill.) experience a mental illness in a given year & 23% of youth 13-18 experience a serious mental illness in a given year. Today, the most common treatment for a mental illness is the prescription psychiatric drugs. Some of these drugs do help improve symptoms, but they also have the potential of leaving patients in an un-functional state after use. The point of this campaign is not to attack the psychiatric industry, but to suggest a treatment which is known to naturally increase the “happy” chemicals in one’s brain. One of the most common mental illness in America is Depression & since music has been scientifically proven to increase brain chemicals such as Dopamine, Serotonin, Oxytocin, & Endorphins; which help alleviate symptoms of Depression, the organizers felt a campaign such as this is long overdue.

The conversation about Music Therapy is generating buzz in the U.S., especially with the recent success of the Oscar winner ‘The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life' & the Sundance Audience Award winner ‘Alive Inside’. Brandon Ross, who's one of the Producers for ‘Before We Were Kings’, says, “A campaign such as this, has the ability to help those who are looking for alternative methods to treat mental illness. One of the key initiatives of ‘Music As Medicine’ will be to start a hashtag campaign on World Mental Health Day. The goal will be to see various "influencers" & more, use #MusicAsMedicine on their social media platforms that day to help raise awareness about the campaign’s cause.

The campaign officially launches in Las Vegas, NV the weekend of Electric Daisy Carnival (June 19th-21st) with in-person appearances & live performances from DJs who appear in ‘Before We Were Kings’. Those wishing to learn more & support the campaign through monetary donations can visiting Crowdrise.com starting June 12th, 2015
