Drepung Gomang Monastery Tour Group to Create Sand Mandala at SaxArt Gallery in Saxapahaw, NC. Opening ceremony June 12th at 10 am. Closing Ceremony June 16th at 2 pm.
PRLog - Jun 05, 2013 - GRAHAM, N.C. -- The SaxArt Gallery is sponsoring the creation of a Sand Mandala by the Monks of the Drepung Gomang Monastery at 1616 Jordan Road, Saxapahaw, North Carolina from June 12 through June 16. The event is open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to closing. Donations are gladly accepted.
Five days are dedicated to cultivating peace and harmony in our mind and extended communities. Beginning on June 12th, at 10 a. m. opening ceremonies, led by the monks, to begin the mandala creation will take place at SaxArt Gallery. The tour leader Geshe Lobsang Tseten and the monks will chant powerful prayers for peace, prosperity, and healing in traditional overtones and the chant master, Geshe Lobsang Chosphel will be intoning a full chord of three notes. This chanting is accompanied by delicate hand gestures, cymbals, drums, horns and flutes.
The closing ceremony will take place June 16th at 2:00 p.m. At this time the mandala [sand painting] will be deconstructed by Geshe Lobsang Tseten and the sands will be dispersed in a flowing body of water, near the gallery.
Mandala construction is the highlight of the monks' artful service. Requiring steady hands and mindful attention, they chart during four days the inner, outer and mystical levels of the divine world. When contemplating the mandala deeply, it can transform the ordinary human mind to higher levels of consciousness.
Mandala means cosmogram or "world of harmony" in Sanskrit. The mandala is created whenever the need for healing of the environment and living beings is felt. The monks consider the present age to one of great need in this respect, and therefore create them where requested throughout the world. When finished, to symbolize the impermanence of all that exists, the colored sands [using vegetable dye] are swept up and poured into a nearby river or stream, for waters to carry its healing energies throughout the world. From beginning to end, to witness the creation of a sand mandala is rewarding for the senses and the mind.
The Monks of Drepung Gomang Monastery are presently on tour in the United States, ready to share the compassion and wisdom of Tibetan Buddhism, to demonstrate the artistic accomplishments of the people of Tibet, and to generate funds to insure the survival of Tibetan culture. Drepung Gomang Monastery will use all donations to house, feed, and educate everyone wishing to study at the monastic center of higher learning - including orphans and refugees fleeing Chinese occupied Tibet.
