Orange County, CA – April 10, 2025 – California Prime Recovery, a premier behavioral health treatment provider located in Fountain Valley, California, is proud to announce the launch of its innovative Adolescent and Teen Substance Use and Mental Health Program, specifically designed to address the rising need for personalized and comprehensive care among youth in Orange County and the broader Southern California region.
With mental health and substance use challenges becoming increasingly prevalent among adolescents, California Prime Recovery recognizes the urgent need for specialized services aimed at this vulnerable population. The new program provides a holistic approach to mental health and well-being and relies on evidence-based therapy methods and plans that are specifically designed for teens facing issues as complex as substance abuse.
These treatment plans are tailored to each adolescent's unique circumstances, addressing not only substance abuse but also underlying mental health conditions that might've led to substance abuse in the first place. These often include but aren't limited to depression, anxiety, and/or trauma.
"Our dedicated team is committed to offering compassionate, accessible, and effective care tailored to the unique needs of adolescents," said Karynne Witkin, CEO of California Prime Recovery. "Our mission is to empower teens and families with the necessary tools to overcome challenges and achieve lasting recovery and wellness."
Teenagers are particularly vulnerable and prone to self-destructive behaviors—such as substance abuse—due to several interconnected development, psychological, and social factors. The adolescent brain undergoes significant restructuring, particularly in the prefrontal cortex and the limbic system, both of which control judgment, emotional control, and reward-seeking behaviors. These changes often lead to mood instability, emotional sensitivity, impulsiveness, and vulnerability to mental health disorders.
Additionally, the increased production of sex hormones affects their mood, stress responses, and emotional regulation, which makes them more susceptible to depression, anxiety, and mood swings. Paired with the constant glamorization of substance abuse in the media and easy access to substances, these factors contribute to substance abuse, either in the form of identity-seeking experimentation or as coping mechanisms to handle emotional distress.
In fact, teenagers in California are approximately 25% more likely to use drugs than the average American teen. More than 10% of 12- to 17-year-olds report using drugs; 85% of them reported using marijuana. However, this isn't without cause, as reports suggest that the incidence of major depressive episodes in adolescents has increased over the last five years. Fortunately, there are effective treatments for substance abuse and mental illnesses, and early intervention often leads to good outcomes.
California Prime Recovery's new program, which encompasses a thorough evaluation process, personalized treatment plans that address specific challenges, and the use of Cognitive and Dialectical Behavior Therapies, as well as individual counseling, can help the youth address and overcome their struggles with substance abuse. The ongoing support even extends beyond the initial treatments, ensuring that adolescents have continuous access to care and community resources and support.
Among the key components of this program is the Virtual Teen Intensive Outpatient offering, which helps adolescents maintain their academic and social responsibility by minimizing disruptions. The virtual format allows teens to apply newly developed coping strategies directly within their environments (either school or home), fostering a practical approach to mental self-care. In addition to virtual treatment options, California Prime Recovery also provides in-person care at its state-of-the-art facility located at 17330 Newhope Street, Suite A, Fountain Valley, CA 92708.
