With Inflation on the Rise, Families are Choosing Drivable Summer Beach Vacations in Texas

South Padre Island, TX

Many middle class families in Texas are gearing up to book their summer vacations and facing sticker shock not related to increased nightly rates. Everything from the average gas price in Texas in May of 2021 at $2.61 compared to May of 2022 at $4.21, an increase of 62% in one year. The median home price rising in Austin up 22.4% just this last year alone.

These cost of living increases are causing families to feel the pinch and consider cutting vacation costs. One great way is selecting a destination that is drivable to avoid buying airfare for each family member like South Padre Island, Texas.

Danny Xue, a single mom from Round Rock, Texas that works in finance for Dell and has a 5 year old Daniel, decided to shift from an all inclusive trip to Cancun with airfare to driving to South Padre Island. “Even though gas is over $4 per gallon, the Cancun trip was nearly $3000 for two of us with air and hotel. I booked a beachfront condo at Saida Towers resort for the same 4 nights for $1500. Gas & food I figured out to be at most $500, a savings of $1000.” Free activities like building sandcastles on South Padre’s public beaches, hunting sand crabs along the dune edge at nightfall, to having mini picnics on the condo’s balcony are all on Danny’s list to do with her Son.

Fuel prices have greatly affected the cost of family beach vacations to those destinations needing airfare, as well as popular cruise lines like Carnival and Royal Caribbean having their bottom line affected by high fuel costs. A tank of gas may seem expensive compared to last year, but compared to the new higher airfare prices, it is still a much more economical choice.

Chad Hart, the managing Director of South Padre Trips.com, a Beach Rentals Agency on the Island and also is on the Board of Directors for the Island’s CVA Tourism Board, says, “our vacation rental booking platform reports demand for properties is already outpacing last summer by at least 15%”. He reported that it is his belief that not just increased airfare prices are to blame – “it is the convenience factor of just driving.”

“Airlines and airports are seeing everything from unruly passengers to excessive TSA security check point line times. Last week Austin Airport increased the recommended arrival time for international flights from 3 hours prior to 3.5 hours prior. With kiddos in tow, that’s just too long of a wait.” These inconveniences are also expected to provide a record summer for beach rentals in the US as jumping in your family SUV is just plain easier.

South Padre Trips provides South Padre Island condo rentals of differing sizes & amenities to suit clients’ budgets & tastes. Their website can include over 50 add on excursions and side trip activities for family beach trips. Booking travel from Sunday to Thursday is generally 35-50% cheaper than on weekends.

Working-class families will still book and take summer vacations despite high inflation but are looking to drive to destinations like South Padre Island, Texas, to save some money as no airfare is needed.
