Paragon Denali Brings Ambient Listening to Rural, Critical Access and Community Hospitals with Nabla

AI integration to reduce documentation burdens for providers, enhance interactions with patients

Altera Digital Health, a global health IT leader, today announced that Nabla's ambient artificial intelligence (AI) assistant for clinicians is now generally available for Paragon® Denali clients. The integration will enable rural, critical access and community hospitals leveraging the cloud-native Paragon Denali electronic health record (EHR) platform to relieve administrative burden and may save providers two hours of clinical note authoring per day on average.

Regardless of specialty or practice area, physicians spend an average of 15.5 hours each week on paperwork and administrative tasks. Nine of those hours are dedicated solely to electronic health record (EHR) documentation. This pulls clinicians away from direct patient care and adds nearly six hours a week to their "pajama time," which refers to time spent on administrative work after hours and on weekends.

Supporting more than 55 specialties, the Nabla API offers a full suite of capabilities including transcription, note generation, creation of patient instructions, extraction of structured medical data and dictation support, covering more than 35 languages. Clinicians using Nabla may save up to two hours per day on documentation, freeing up time for direct patient care. Paragon Denali clients leveraging the Nabla integration can automatically generate clinical notes within native EHR workflows in approximately five seconds, saving busy providers time, clicks and keystrokes. Clinicians can also choose from multiple note templates and set up specific configurations to have Nabla naturally adapt to their documentation styles and preferences. By reducing documentation time, the integration enables providers to see more patients and spend less time focused on technology during clinical encounters, resulting in more meaningful interactions and improved patient access to care.

“Altera’s ambient listening is not just innovative, it is going to be a necessity to improve patient care, quality, efficiency and flow,” said Kyle Kellum, CEO of Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center, a Paragon client since 2009. “Ambient listening is something every clinic should consider to help drive operational sustainability.”

Altera made Paragon Denali generally available in late 2024 and is currently working with several community hospital clients to implement the EHR, built in the Microsoft Azure cloud platform. Due to Paragon Denali’s containerized services architecture and software-as-a-service (SaaS) model, clients will be able to adopt new innovations like Nabla faster, with minimal downtime and fewer disruptions to patient care and operations.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Altera to bring the power of ambient AI to the clinicians they support,” said Delphine Groll, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer, Nabla. “Altera’s commitment to critical access hospitals and underserved communities through the Paragon Denali EHR aligns deeply with our mission—together, we’re putting AI-powered clinical documentation into the hands of providers who need it most, reducing administrative burden so they can focus more on patient care.”

“Hospitals with limited budgets and resources still face the same industry-wide pressures to improve patient outcomes and reduce provider burnout,” said Nikhil Bhatia, Vice President, Paragon Solution Management, Altera Digital Health. “Paragon Denali’s integration with Nabla not only provides an innovative way to address longstanding challenges, but it is also a powerful testament to Altera’s overall vision to enable providers, empower patients and transform healthcare organizations.”
