Feigen Advisors, the leading advisory company for CEOs of large global enterprises, today published its 11th annual New CEO Report. Based on 10 years of data, the Report reveals surprising stability in the C-Suites of America’s largest public companies.
The number of new CEOs appointed to lead the top 250 companies in the S&P 500 by revenue, which represent more than 80% of its market capitalization, has remained stable over the last decade, averaging 28 per year and peaking at 33 in 2020. The average age of new CEOs has stayed almost exactly the same at 55 years old and four out of five of new CEOs continue to be internal promotions.
The 29 new CEOs profiled in this year’s New CEO Report run companies with a combined total of nearly 3 million employees, $2.0 trillion in 2024 revenues, and $2.5 trillion in market capitalization. The Report also provides data-driven insights over 10 years into trends in new CEO’s average tenure, age, gender, and educational background.
Marc Feigen, Founder and CEO of Feigen Advisors, commented, “While today’s ubiquitous CEO narrative centers on increased CEO turnover, the data shows that CEO tenure is stable at the largest companies, which suggests they are successfully navigating today’s tough environment. We also found that most internally promoted New CEOs in our largest companies are long term insiders who have built successful track records at their companies over decades. Insider or not, anyone who has become a CEO today grew up in a tough environment. They are ready for the challenge.”
Feigen continued, “This year’s report again contains important insights and data gleaned from our proprietary analysis, in addition to detailed background information on the impressive group of new CEOs who took office last year.”
