Avista Senior Living Expands Partnership with SafelyYou to Provide Innovative AI Video Technology for Fall Detection and Prevention

Expansion helps Avista drive innovative care across its communities, lead the industry with greater adoption of world-leading technology

Today Avista Senior Living, a provider of innovative, quality care for seniors, announced the expansion of its partnership with SafelyYou, the leader in empowering safer, more person-centered dementia care through real-time AI video technology and 24/7 remote clinical experts. With today’s news, nine more Avista communities now have access to SafelyYou’s world-leading technology, which offers a new standard of care that addresses silent falls, provides peace of mind for families, and drives move-ins to Avista's communities.

“Kindness is at the core of what we do at Avista—it comes from a deep concern for our residents, their families, and our employees,” said Craig Ahlstrom, Jr., chief operating officer of Avista Senior Living. “Part of that concern is driving the highest standard of care, and embracing innovation when it makes better-quality care possible. With SafelyYou, we saw the opportunity to adopt advanced technology seamlessly to help solve one of the most complex and costly challenges any senior care provider faces: resident falls. SafelyYou has not only helped us reduce risks and unnecessary ER visits, it’s also helped us reduce response times, so residents get the care they need faster. It’s the very definition of innovation, making us more efficient, more effective, and able to elevate the quality of care we provide.”

Since Avista’s launch of the technology in March 2021, SafelyYou has been able to detect falls that were previously silent (12% of total falls detected). These silent falls are defined as unintentional on-the-ground events where the resident is able to self-recover, and often result in injuries of unknown origin. With SafelyYou's technology, residents receive proper medical attention, even after a silent fall, and the risk of injuries going undetected and untreated is mitigated.

In addition to addressing silent falls, SafelyYou's technology provides higher visibility into the severity of falls, thus reducing unnecessary emergency room (ER) visits. For instance, with the help of SafelyYou, Avista determined that 20% of falls were intentional self-lowering, but would have caused incident reports and ER visits without video evidence proving otherwise. In fact, SafelyYou fall videos showed that only 1% of falls necessitated an ER visit, saving Avista residents and their families the emotional toll of visiting the hospital and cost of hospital bills while allowing staff to provide the appropriate level of care based on the severity of the fall.

“We’re thrilled to be able to support more residents, staff, and families of Avista communities,” said George Netscher, founder and CEO of SafelyYou. “The results we’ve achieved with them are so critically important, especially those silent falls. Helping the community to now see falls that would’ve otherwise gone undetected—with the potential for injuries to have gone untreated because they were unknown—means residents are better able to get the care they need. And that’s what it’s all about. Better outcomes for residents. Innovation is at its best when it improves quality of care. That’s what SafelyYou is doing in Avista communities—and communities from coast-to-coast.”

The adoption of SafelyYou's technology demonstrates Avista's commitment to providing innovative solutions for its residents and families. The partnership also highlights SafelyYou's momentum in driving enhanced outcomes through innovation, which is the new standard for meeting the needs of senior care today.

About SafelyYou

Originating in 2015 as the doctoral research of CEO George Netscher—and inspired by his own family's experience with Alzheimer's disease—SafelyYou was spun out of UC Berkeley’s Artificial Intelligence Research Lab, one of the top five AI research groups in the world. The company’s passionate mission is to empower safer, more person-centered dementia care through world-leading, real-time AI video technology and 24/7 remote clinical experts. SafelyYou is used by skilled nursing facilities and assisted living communities all across North America—from the largest national organizations to regional and local ones, too. SafelyYou is one of five most innovative fall technologies referenced in the Senate Falls Report (2019).

SafelyYou gives a voice to those living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Its AI-video technology sees critical care moments in real-time, detecting on-the-ground events with over 99.5% accuracy, and sending only one false alert to the on-site team per camera every two years. SafelyYou’s remote clinical experts have seen more falls and on-the-ground events than anyone in the world, enabling a level of predictive, person-centered dementia care that was never before possible. SafelyYou is solving a critical problem across senior care and making an impact by reducing falls by 40% and fall-related ER visits by 80%.
